I have enjoyed Tony Bennett’s singing and his optimistic personality for many years. I saw him perform in person only once, but it was unforgettable. He was so full of joy and so connected to his audience. His deep feeling for the American Standards came through in every word he sang and every move that he made. Bennett was famous for doing a twirl step while singing his version of the Fred Astaire classic, “Steppin’ Out”, into his early 90’s.
Tony Bennett released his MTV Unplugged Album in 1994. The TV show and album brought his music to a younger audience that gained an appreciation of his style and songs. Bennett released 61 studio albums, 11 live albums, and 33 compilation albums. He loved to collaborate with artists from many genres. He sang with Stevie Wonder, Sting, Celine Dion, Paul McCartney and countless others. Lady Gaga became his most noteworthy singing partner. They recorded a few albums and performed in concert together often.
Tony Bennett’s family shared the news that he had Alzheimer’s in March of 2020. He was almost 94 and performed a concert right before COVID stopped the shows. His Alzheimer’s progressed and Bennett’s family announced that he would do one final show at Radio City Music Hall in August, 2021 to celebrate his 95th birthday. Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett were the subject of a very touching 60 Minutes story last month. Gaga told the world that despite Bennett having a very limited memory, when he heard his song repertoire his eyes lit up and he knew every word.
The concert was a rousing success and was presented as a one hour special Thanksgiving week on CBS. If you have not seen the 60 Minutes story or the special they are available on You Tube and Paramount on Demand.
Watching Tony Bennett still sing so well and appreciate his audience was exhilarating. As he sang his classic “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” as his last encore, my heart was touched very deeply.
