As I write this blog Tuesday evening, a fairly large hurricane (Idalia) is brewing up the western side of Florida. Even though my family and I reside on the central east coast of Florida, there are still warnings to prepare. This means ensuring you have bottled water, plenty of nonperishable food on hand (we always keep pasta, canned goods and bagged item such as chips and other snacks that can withstand the lack of need for electricity), plus a tank of propane to run the BBQ if need be. After last years storms (and Super Storm Sandy years ago), we feel like pros at this point. My son’s high school had their Open House where we could meet the teachers this evening. It was business as usual even with the announcement that all schools in our county would be closed tomorrow. We had some severe rain for about an hour and so far, it’s been calm. But we know some winds and more rain will happen overnight into the morning and like clockwork, all small items were removed from the yard, garbage cans secured behind a fence, potted plants, hose reels, patio furniture and our welcome signs were all brought inside the garage. Phones are charging and we filled up all vehicles with gas. It really isn’t so bad, if you have a plan. We have plenty of water in the pool so that will keep the toilet running regardless of water availability. It may be an interesting night, but we feel safe and secure and prepared. To those about to get hit on the west side of the state, my hopes are that all will be OK. Mother Nature's power at its strongest.
