HBO has a fascinating interview that features a great conversation and terrific performances. Bruce Springsteen and Howard Stern had a bit of a feud and this session was the first time the two had met.

Howard is able to delve into Bruce’s life with incisive questions.  Bruce is extremely honest about his relationships with his parents, family, and bandmates.  Bruce reveals that his father was both his greatest hero and greatest foe.  Howard relates that he had a similar relationship with his dad.

Bruce pushes the right buttons to get Bruce to trace his development as a musician after seeing Elvis Presley on the Ed Sullivan show when he was 8 years old.  Bruce’s discipline in learning to play guitar is a sweet story that involves his listening to records at a slower speed to learn the notes and chords.

Bruce confidence as a performer is traced to his constant performing in bands since he was 15.  The crowd’s cheering enabled Bruce to audition without fear for a Columbia Records contract.  Howard asks about Bruce’s legendary 3 hour plus concert performances.  And, Bruce promises that they will continue as long as possible.

Even better were the intimate musical performances.  Bruce played guitar and piano as he sang some of his best songs including: Thunder Road, Jungleland, and Born to Run.

The conversation promises to hold your interest and the songs make for an unforgettable experience.  Watch the show to find out which Bruce song makes Howard cry!
