Metamorphosis has always been a theme of great literature, theater, film, and television. The most notable transformation of characters in movies include: Sherman Klump to Buddy Love in the “Nutty Professor”, Jack Napier to The Joker in “Batman” and Seth Brundle to a fly in “The Fly”.
The changeover from Jimmy McGill to Saul Goodman in “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” has made for fantastic viewing. Bob Odenkirk plays both characters with verve and zest. Seeing, Odenkirk transform from an “ambulance chasing” lawyer to a drug cartel lawyer has been a great journey. Vince Gilligan, the creator and head writer of both shows has designed a madcap world that takes the viewer on a continuous ride of surprise, suspense, horror, and wonder.
“Comedy, Comedy, Comedy, Drama” Bob Odenkirk’s memoir is a fascinating read. Odenkirk has transformed from a comedy writer, sketch performer, and comedy director to a terrific dramatic actor. Watching his conversion on the last 3 years of “Breaking Bad” and the six seasons of “Better Call Saul” has been great television.
