Running has been part of my personal narrative for decades. Years ago it was 30 minutes on the “dreadmill” enduring boredom to build strength and endurance.
When I moved to NYC, running became a way to get outside in nature, challenging myself to run all year irrespective of the weather. Never boring - always a source of satisfaction.
I now get to run the often daunting hills of Riverdale; its uneven streets and walkways, and its parks far less curated than Central and Riverside Parks offer new challenges.
I’ve gotten lost and found my way, adding extra unplanned miles backtracking or going in circles. This past weekend I discovered a series of trails along the River and enjoyed quite a Mudder. I appreciate this new benefit of blending exercise and exploration. I have quickly learned my way around this mazelike gem in the “boogie down Bronx.” (TY Doc Robert)
One thing that has not changed in all these years is that I run alone – charting my own course, deciding time, pace and distance, lost in my thoughts, enjoying the activity on my terms. It’s my time – completely self-indulgent and self- absorbed.
Running is a moving meditation that leaves me relaxed and renewed. There are certainly other ways to relax, renew, exercise and explore. Running remains my choice – something I do just “for the health of it?”
What do you do JUST FOR YOU no matter what?
