A Grammy Tribute Concert tonight, CBS at 9PM, will highlight the incredible career of New York’s superstar, Paul Simon. From his hits as a duo with Art Garfunkel, through his solo career, Simon has been able to explore both deeply personal feelings and the exuberance of world music as a unifying force for music lovers.
Simon’s writing explored the depth of despair and hope. “Sound of Silence” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” are two of the most acclaimed songs of his career with Garfunkel. Simon had a touch of the silly and humorous, too. “At the Zoo” was a clever look at the beauty of animals.
Simon had a knack to make a song bring pictures to your mind. Perhaps, the best soundtrack of all time might be the songs written for “The Graduate”, the 1967 Mike Nichols film starring Dustin Hoffman. “Mrs. Robinson” and “Scarborough Fair” are two of the songs that fit the movie to perfection.
Simon explored the world’s music and was able to combine sharp lyrics with African beats in the fantastic “Graceland” album. Then he synthesized the sounds of Brazil to make more fabulous music with “The Rhythm of the Saints” album.
Tonight’s show will feature performances by Sting, Dave Matthews, Stevie Wonder, Garth Brooks, and Elton John.
I can’t wait to see “Who” will sing “What” song! What is your favorite Paul Simon song?
