Orchids

Orchids

We have three orchid plants. We haven’t seen flowers in years — most likely not since the flowers when we first bought the plants.
There is a large plant and two smaller ones. And one is even smaller than the other.
Depending on the “tips for orchids” of the moment, we water them, let them dry out, mist them, keep them by the window, keep them in darkness.
Sometimes, when I pass a plant shop, I am tempted to buy an orchid with flowers. But with the three at home, I feel like that would be tantamount to surrender…and a serious betrayal of loyalty.
And then. A few weeks ago, I noticed a growth on the scrawniest of the plants. The little nub looked different from the air roots that often emerge.
The patience and care has finally paid off. It looks like we may have flowers. It’s been a long time and I’m sure it will be worth it.
Now, I ask, will the others follow their scrawny fellow?
