Shelly gave me a choice since she shows were on "her" nights, last night and Friday, of one.  Th choice was a full band show in South Orange, New Jersey and perhaps 90-120 minutes driving there or a perhaps a less stressful drive to Bayshore for a trio show.  I opted for Friday eve.  Full Band.  Excellent decision, if I may say so. The artist, a personal favorite, Richie Furay -- a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Buffalo Springfield and co-founder (with Jimmy Messina who I saw perform earlier this month) of my long-time fave band, Poco.  It was a tight performance with some jamming.

Richie turned 80 in May when this birthday performance show was originally scheduled; Nancy Stone, spouse of Richie's late manager David Stone, presented Richie with a celebratory cake before this Friday eve performance.  While Richie opened ("Pickin' Up The Pieces") and closed  ("A Good Feelin' to Know") with Poco songs, he only played one other Poco song ("You Are the One").  The set included eight Buffalo Springfield tunes though two ("Kind Woman" and "A Child's Claim to Fame") were included on Poco's first live LP, DeLiverin'.  Richie sang eight selections from his solo career -- "Stand Your Guard" from his 1978 LP, Dance A Little Light, was a personal highlight. Three of my fave tunes he wrote and sang were with the Souther Hillman Furay Band; Richie and band performed a great "Believe Me," but I would have enjoyed "Fallin' in Love" (his only gold record) and "On The Line."  It's tough when a performer has a deep catalogue.  I can only cherish that over the years I've seen him perform live many of his songs I really enjoy (I have live versions of many!).

Richie's very talented daughter, Jesse Lynch, took lead turns on covers of Bonnie Raitt ("(Goin’) Wild For You Baby") and Lee Ann Womack ("Don’t Tell Me").

My friend Steve Wandy also attended (I did not know but saw his Facebook post which included these pics.):

An acoustic mid-set interlude featured four Buffalo Springfield tunes, including a Neil Young medley of songs Richie took lead vocals on the iconic band's first LP ("Flying On the Ground is Wrong," "Do I Have to Come Right out and Say It," and "Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing."); I really liked Richie's vocal on those original recordings so I welcome him performing them live.
