In the past, I would have followed the reporting of hurricanes, earthquakes etc. with a sense of empathy but, admittedly, also with a bit of apathy. In this world in which we are immediately connected to world events through the internet, it is easy to become a bit emotionally detached from world events.
I noticed, however, that my interest in Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma is much different other natural disasters. I have been anxiusly watching CNN for updates on both storms as well as Hurricane Jose that follows. My husband and I have already donated money directly to the Red Cross for hurricane relief.
It's clear to me that my difference in attitude comes from living through Superstorm Sandy. I know what the people in Houston are feeling when they see that their homes and all of their personal items destroyed. I know what it feels like to see that Red Cross truck come down your street to give you a hot meal and a warm hug as you tearfully thank them for helping you during your darkest of days.
Even as I write this blog, and watch the hurricane coverage, my eyes are tearing up. I guess that my own experience living through a super storm has shaped my perspective in responding to other’s experiences. What experience of yours has reshaped your perspective?
