“Moonage Daydream,” a new documentary, takes an enthralling 140 minute look at the amazing career of David Bowie. The doc by Brett Morgen, an Oscar winner, is creative, touching, outrageous and above all a musical testament to the incredible 50 year career of Bowie.
Seeing some of his biggest hits (Changes, Heroes, All the Young Dudes, Space Oddity, and Let’s Dance) performed in clubs and small arenas before adoring fans is captivating and eye-opening. The concert music is mixed to beautiful effect by Tony Visconti, Bowie’s long-time producer. A review noted, and I agree, that seeing Bowie perform in “Moonage Daydream” is like sitting in the front row of the best concert of the year.
Morgen had full access to Bowie’s estate of music, films, paintings, and artifacts. The images are edited beautifully by director Morgen. The use of over 75 clips of Bowie’s favorite films works beautifully as they are interspersed into the film seamlessly.
Bowie was a fearless explorer into the worlds of culture, gender, fashion, style, art, and music.
See it on the big screen to get the visuals and sounds of Bowie to maximum effect.
