Joanne, Charcoal and I annually "snowbird" in Key West, the southern most point of the continental United States and home of mile marker 0 on the US-1 highway.

My birthday is in two days and, as per our 10 year tradition, we memorialized it by photo opping at the appropriate mile marker (Leigh Connell picture).

Our friends Leigh and Jim Connell have ferried us there the past 2 years and there is talk of the beginnings of an annual tradition. I sure hope so, because they get it, they get me and I'm all about Tradition.

As you can imagine, spending so much time together in a car allows for animated and interesting conversation. Many topics came up, eg, family, politics, fishing, sports, trivia and more. However, the most poignant topic surely involved speculation as to my final mile marker!

Ah, mortality...

Happy birthday, Fred!
I love your blogs about Key West, they always take me back to the summer of '88 when I lived there. It brings back such clear images and I can damn near feel that air. The metaphor of a final mile marker is a really profound image, and I'm quite captivated by it now. It causes me to wonder where in the world I would most like to walk up and tap my final mile marker. I have traveled to and have lived in lots of places, and I am quite sure that my marker is not where I'm living now. I've never felt any attachment to this area at all and I've lived here for 21 and a half years. You've given me something new and very important to ponder.
Thanks so much!
