It was one of those days you dread while on vacation. As our cruise ship pulled into the port of Corfu Greece, we looked outside our balcony to see drenching rainfall. Given that we were scheduled to take a bus tour of the island, I was not concerned; I did not expect the rain to affect our itinerary.

As soon as the bus pulled away from the dock, I realized I was wrong. Along with torrential rain comes heavy fog. Many of the sights I expected to see, such as the site where allegedly Odysseus was washed ashore in The Odyssey, was blanketed in fog.  My anticipation of seeing the beautiful sights of Corfu quickly turned to disappointment.

Our tour guide, however, was very a very smart and adaptable woman.  Given the weather, she altered our itinerary a bit. In doing so, she brought us to a traditional Greek café where we relaxed for a time and could purchase some souvenirs made by local artisans. As I sat in the café eating the best baklava I have ever had, drinking Greek coffee, looking at the worry beads I had purchased for my family and friends back home, and just watching the rain make its way down the ancient streets of Corfu, I realized I was truly relaxed. And isn’t that what vacations are supposed to be about?
