There is a large political movement underway on the internet. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with any of President Trump’s executive orders. Rather it is an effort to declare today, the day after the Super Bowl, a national holiday; Smunday. And, of course, as a national holiday salaried employees would have a paid day off.
The movement is being led by Heinz Corporation. The food giant -- makers of Heinz Ketchup, Oscar Mayer hot dogs, Velveeta cheese and other products – estimates that more than 16 million people call in sick the day after the Super Bowl, which costs the country about $1 billion in lost productivity. And the rest who do show up for work are just plain tired and cranky. So the food company's giving all of its salaried employees the day off today with pay.
We have an annual Super Bowl party at our house for about twenty-five people. My husband and I normally straighten up late into the night. On Monday morning we are always exhausted. As self employed workers, I am unsure whether we would take the day off but it would be nice if everyone else did and I could have a quiet workday.
Are you in favor of Smunday?
