Before the internet and cell phones there were two ways to wish someone a happy birthday. You either called them or mailed them a birthday card. With people you are close to, you probably would have done both. With cell phones and social media, our choices are much more expansive.
Currently, in addition to mailing cards and calling, one can text, post on Facebook or Instagram. And for those who are really social media savvy, you can send a Snap story (admittedly I have no idea how one posts on Snapchat I just have it to follow my children’s stories). Posting birthday wishes on Facebook has become extremely popular with people receving hundreds of birthday posts.
Recently, on my birthday, my brother sent me a long text message filled with nice thoughts. I read the text message with mixed feelings. Finally, I texted him back and thanked him for the sentiments. And then I added, “I’m your sister, don’t I deserve a call?” He understood what I was saying as he called me immediately and apologized profusely for the slight.
As our technology improves, it affects everything we do. And the rubrics appear to be changing daily. How do you wish someone a happy birthday?
