Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are the subjects of a fascinating documentary series. If you liked their looks, movies, enjoyed their acting and directing, or ate Newman products, this series is for you. Ethan Hawke was chosen to direct the project by Newman and Woodward’s youngest daughter, Clea Newman.
Hawke used a memoir that Newman had written but never published as the bones of the project. George Clooney speaks Newman’s lines and Laura Linney does the same for Joanne Woodward. Other top actors are enlisted to make their friends and colleagues come alive. The discussions about their acting and their lives are intriguing.
Newman and Woodward made 16 movies together and their charities raised over $570 million dollars and the foundation keeps operating. As Hawke said, “they had love, they had family, and they were ethical citizens.”
Tune in for lots of revelations. Many are joyful, some are sad, and others are salacious.
My favorite Newman movies are: “Somebody Up There Likes Me”, “Exodus”, and “Cool Hand Luke”. Joanne Woodward was amazing in “The Three Faces of Eve” and “Sybil”
