Two superstars are out with very intriguing projects. Both songwriters are notable for the impact of their songs. Bob Dylan’s songs fueled a generation’s fresh look at many aspects of the 1960’s and beyond. His songs are considered so influential and well-crafted that he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Taylor Swift’s songs have become a haven for many people searching for meaning in their lives and their relationships. Her knack for capturing the thoughts and feelings of a younger generation has catapulted her to superstar status.
Dylan has a new book, “The Philosophy of Modern Song.” He writes essays that delve into over 60 songs including songs by: Stephen Foster, Elvis Costello, Hank Williams, and Nina Simone. The book has been reviewed as a part music appreciation class and part podcast rant. It sounds fascinating and his shout out to Perry Como for “being downright incredible” and a chapter on Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” make the book sound tantalizing.
“Midnight” is Swift’s newest album. From the moment it dropped, the songs and videos have become sensations. Every one of the ten songs on the album appears on the Top Ten of the Billboard charts. I have seen some of the videos and they are beautifully produced. Her creativity with songs is limitless.
Each of these artists, one 31 and the other at 80, continue to make a huge impact on the musical landscape.
