Friday, I attend the Queens Borough President's Annual State of the Borough ("SOTB") speech. The last several years I've attended the SOTB with my daughter Marisa who works at the American Jewish Committee. This year I met in the parking lot the venue, Queens Theatre in the Park, shares with the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. She took a FHV over and had it stop where she saw my Blue Car. I drove there from Grand Junction (the nickname Marisa gave to our home based on a Poco instrumental that appeared on its first LP, Pickin' Up The Pieces and as the middle song of a great "long medley" on Poco's first live LP, DeLiverin') with a neighboring Bellerose civic leader with whom I also serve on Queens Community Board 13, Lourdes Hartrick. Lourdes is also a member of Gotham Queens, filling its realtor "seat." For me, Marisa was one of two highlights of Borough President Donovan Richards' speech.
As I watched the speech, the video screen behind the "BP" showed him pictured in a group shot with Marisa standing right behind him. It certainly made this parent proud.
I posted to X when I got in,
My highlight of @QnsBPRichards State of the Borough (#SOTB) @QueensTheatre besides word on new 116th Pct (out of @NYPD105Pct to serve southern portion of @QueensCb13 will be open soon) is seeing pic including @Marisa_Bearak of @AJCGlobal on screen as @DRichardsQNS speaks
As to the precinct, my community board colleague Bess DeBetham worked on getting that project done since the City Charter imposed "coterminality" of City services on its community boards. It became a big issue for me during the successive administrations of then Mayors David Dinkins and Rudy Giuliani. Dinkins added a second precinct to Manhattan Community Board 14 covering Washington Heights and Inwood. The so-called America's Mayor initiated Staten Island 121st Street with actually hot built during the (Mike) Bloomberg mayoralty. I had worked on Local Law 91 of 1989 which required the NYPD to report its response times to crimes in progress. The data showed my home community board and its coterminous 105th Pct had the longest such response times and I raised the availability of that data in support of the long promised 116th.
Before the proceeding, Lourdes took this photo for my longtime friend Rabbi Avrohom Hecht (l) who is executive director of Project Lead, President/Business Agent Jose DeJesus of my client Amalgamated Transit Union Local No. 1179, this commentator and Marisa.
