I won’t let June end without writing about “Pride Month” especially as we move towards Celebrating the 4th of July.
“Pride Month” is about celebrating the refusal to be marginalized, diminished and denied equity. It’s about celebrating the choice – not always an easy, safe or prudent one – to walk through the world authentically. And it is about celebrating the human capacity to thrive despite fear, ignorance and bigotry.
While being LGBTQ+ is not a choice, living openly is. It’s a decision that often comes at great risk. Celebrating “Pride” honors the choice and also shines a light on what is possible for those who are still in hiding. It also sends a message that hate and ignorance will not prevail.
Celebrating “Pride Month” reflects the spirit and vibrancy of the American Dream. And celebrating the dignity, integrity and resilience of the human spirit is very Gothamish.
Happy Pride and Happy Independence Day!
