You know what they say about birthdays, right? Sure beats the alternative.
It’s certainly a mixed blessing, especially once you’ve reached “a certain age.” One day nearer the end, but the end could be another 50 - 60 years away…
What do get for someone who doesn’t necessarily “have everything,” but doesn’t want anything? My sweetheart of 27+ years, whose birthday was yesterday (St Patrick’s Day!), is not a collector of “stuff.” So buying her things is kind of useless. I know that both Fred and Nancy have longer partnerships than mine and many other Gothamites too, so what do you do?
Oh, I know you can buy the odd golf club or diamond, but how do you make the day so very special, I mean, this is the love of your life, by just making a dinner or writing a poem. In my case, I posted a photo montage of my love on the FB and it did touch her with all the wonderful comments and birthday wishes. We’ll have a nice dinner and I’ll write a Haiku (it’s a tradition), but I want to learn to be a more generous person, especially to her.
I googled it and one thing it said was “embrace gratitude.” That’s a nice place to start.
Thank you, Gotham, for everything.
