It seems that people and the media talk up the MOMA and the MET frequently. But, the MCNY does not receive much notice or attention. The Museum of the City of New York has a lot to offer beyond the fabulous building on Fifth Avenue at 103rd st.
The museum celebrates all things New York City, The people, the art, the architecture, the music, etc. are all examined beautifully. A fascinating documentary on the city’s history is part of the permanent exhibit.
Currently, the exhibit about the New York City Music Scene of the 1980’s is explored with photographs, videos, and artifacts. The range is wide: Madonna, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and the Talking Heads are featured.
The most charming show award goes to the Puppets of New York exhibit. You will be brought back to another era. Seeing Howdy Doody, Lamb Chop, Oscar the Grouch and a host of other puppets will bring back loads of memories.
The museum is only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday till the Spring. And, if the weather is good, be sure to walk across the street to see the famous Central Park Conservatory Garden. A great day is guaranteed.
