Some family traditions stick and just remind you of special times. In my family, one of those traditions is full of frogs.
When my children were in nursery school many, many years ago, they learned a song about frogs. That meant, we all learned a song about frogs – frogs here, frogs there, frogs are jumping everywhere. Come on, I know there are whole groups of you that are singing along with me right now.
Our tradition demands that frogs go with Passover and so for over 20 years, our Seder table has included dozens of green plastic frogs. In my special “Passover Box” that we take out once each year lives the Ziploc bag to which the frogs retreat at the end of each holiday to rest until the following year.
Part of the tradition had been a friendly toss of frogs from the table at the end of the song – at my son. Over the years, he learned to duck and bob to try to avoid the throw, only sometimes with success.
This year, the live version of my son was not with us for the holiday. But, fear not, the tradition continued. Instead, we brought the life-size flat of Eric that adorned the dais at his Bar Mitzvah – we call it “Fleric” (remember Flat Stanley?). Fleric was this year’s frog toss recipient. Not quite the same, I still prefer the in-person version.
