At times, people can forget the real reason they love someone.  They may not forget that they love someone, but the real reason other than obligation may not always be at the forefront.  Luckily I am never allowed to experience such slippage.

Last night a co-worker of my wife, who along with her boyfriend have become good friends ours, received some extremely good news.  Up until yesterday, she had been an administrative sales assistant.  At the end of the day she was told that she was promoted to a full-time sales position, a significant step up in her life.  My wife called me and asked if I could get out of what I was doing to find a way to meet them out to celebrate.

We spent a couple of hours at the bar eating, drinking and indulging our friends' excitement at such a well-deserved reward.  As we prepared to leave, we settled up with the bartender and struck up a brief conversation with a woman sitting alone at the bar.  The woman turned out to be a very nice lady and also the bartender's mother.  She happened to make a complimentary comment about my wife's wallet.  It was far more cute than expensive, but I guess it was one that she recognized and asked my wife where she got it.  She gushed only briefly before my wife walked closer to her and chatted with her quietly for a moment.  The woman protested politely as my wife had emptied the wallet and given it to her with a hug and a Merry Christmas.  Not taking no for an answer, she smiled and we all said good night.

I'd love to brag that my wife wants for nothing, but it unfortunately just wouldn't be the case. She is, however, the best person I know and every once in a while, she subtly, unwittingly reminds me of that.  It was a great night.
