A Dog's Life

Fred’s last blog about his dog Charcoal got me thinking a lot about our pup, Luna. The bond that has developed between us in just three months, is amazing. We can sense each other’s needs and know when something is not right with either of us.

One fascinating aspect of this is when it gets close to her mealtime. Luna has a particular bark, but really it starts as a small yelp in the morning. A kind of wake of call to say, hay, I am hungry, it’s time to get up. If it is ignored, it gets progressively louder and more forceful. She knows how to get us up. In the evening, its is usually a deliberate stare followed by jumping up to my waist. She will even bite into the air, with no sound, indicating she is hungry. We like to keep her on a tight schedule, 5:30 AM and 7:00pm for meals. But as she grows and gets hungrier, it becomes tougher to stick to this without a snack during the day.

I love to watch her when I am in the room with her. She usually plops down by my legs and rests her rather large and now heavy head, onto my feet as a pillow. I enjoy the bond and the warmth she exudes. As she gets into a deeper sleep, her positions change and I laugh as she usually ends up on her back, hind legs spread open and paws now in a bent position with one ear flapped open. It is cute and humorous at the same time. I usually take a quick picture on my phone and send to my wife if she is at work, captioned, “current situation.”

Luna has become the center of attention and of course is loved by all. Her reactions when getting a new toy is just like a young kid. Total excitement, curiosity and pleasure. It extends the bond between us and makes life’s sometimes tough times, that much more bearable. A true companion and best friend. We love our Luna.
