237 Lafayette Street - an address that I will never forget. It is the address of the building on Lafayette Street between Spring and Prince streets in what is now the upscale neighborhood of SOHO (bordering on NOHO) in New York City. My father’s printing company was on the second floor.
I stood across the street a few days ago and glanced up at the second floor windows - now covered with scaffolding. I remembered my father’s image glancing out at Lafayette Street from behind his desk. I remember standing by the window as a youngster.
They say that one of the certainties is change and the neighborhood speaks to that truth. The now bustling neighborhood, with upscale retail and endless street traffic, covered the images in my mind of an era gone by.
And when we sat down to dinner at a little restaurant on Mulberry Street, my brother-in-law asked for a “Screwdriver”. The waitress had no idea what he was talking about.
