*A Personal Note From Laney *

Goodbye 2018 and Hello 2019! 2018 was an amazing year, but I can tell that
2019 is going to be even better. How do I know? Aside from the fact that my
cousin Louise is a psychic (yes, really), I can just feel it. There are so
many new places to visit. A boatload of experiences to try. Oodles of foods
to savor. I traveled to Italy five times last year; some with clients and a
couple for trade shows.  And each trip added a new life experience. This
year I'm visiting Ireland and Scotland - and I'm so excited to learn
about these countries. And that place that has my heart, Italy?  Of course
I'm going!  And hopefully I'll see some of you there, too.

*How the Government Shutdown Affects International Travel*

The government shutdown is beginning to affect travel in ways big & small.
If you're planning to fly, the FAA’s air traffic controllers are working
without pay.  TSA security agents are starting to call in sick since they
too have been working without pay.  Security lines may be longer than
normal.  The government’s passport agency is still issuing passports but
many local offices inside federal buildings are closed.  If you need to
update your Global Entry credentials, the interviews have been cancelled.
My husband, who travels a lot internationally, received an email that his
appointment to renew his Global Entry was cancelled. However he was told he
could have an on-site interview by a customs agent upon returning from
overseas as he passes through immigration. Just what you want to do after a
long international flight...

If you have plans right now to visit Washington DC’s Smithsonian museums
and National Zoo, you'll have to try another time as they are closed.
Many National
Parks

are either operating on a very limited basis or are also closed.  Reports
of bathrooms and garbage overflowing are being reported and the parks are
being shut since there is no maintenance staff to clean them.  Tour
operations and guides have also been furloughed so in many cases you'll on
your own.

Most government websites aren't being updated during the shutdown.  So, you
will have to rely on local news and blogs for the latest information on
what’s open or not; what services may or may not be offered and how these
things could affect your travel plans.  While patience may be required,
just remember, it’s all part of the adventure!
