[Fredslist] Need Help with Car Accident

Hello, fellow Gothamites,

I could use some Gotham know-how for this one.

Recently, as I slept overnight, my car was totaled by a drunk driver who rammed into it while it was parked on the street. (He also took out a tree and my mailbox.)

The car has been deemed a total loss and, as it was an older minivan, I've been offered an amount that is not acceptable to me. The car was paid off and my wife planned to drive it for at least 1 or 2 more years. We were not planning on purchasing a new car at this time.

The other driver is 100% responsible.

Do I have any rights to get any more money for the loss of my car? (The police officer mentioned that I might, as a victim of a crime in NY State.) Additionally, I heard that I may be able to sue the driver for punitive damages.

If you know of anyone I should speak with about this, please recommend.
