Fred, Jefferson and Gotham -

Thank you all for sharing the wonderful pictures. An amazing way to remember and commemorate this day. . . .

In class yesterday morning, I asked my college students where they were and what they remembered about that horror-filled day. Many were little - kindergarten through 4th grade. Their memories were intimate: mothers picked them up early from school, parents came home early from work, every one was quiet and watched the news. Some remembered their parents crying. More than one said: people were nice to each other.

I remember that too. New Yorkers were united, with each other and with the country, in their grief and loss. No one honked car horns, people held doors for each other. We made eye contact with one another.

But most of them really had no personal experience of that day beyond childhood perspectives.

I shared Welles's story and video. They were stunned. His story made it real. Some cried and all were silent.

In Welles they now have a young role model of huge heart and impeccable character.

Through his story they will understand this day and what it means differently now - forever. And Welles has shown them the people they can aspire to be.

With love,
Victoria
