Gotham’s twice-a-year Leftie Lunch was held yesterday at the august, if unofficial, Gotham headquarters, The Friar’s Club.  This is a rather exclusive group in that one must be left-handed to join.  Members commiserate about being “a downtrodden minority”, and tell stories about how nasty grade school teachers would hit kids’ left hands when caught writing leftie.  Sports were also mentioned:  Apparently leftie golfers are at some disadvantage, while hockey actually confers an advantage.  Who knew?  When I played hockey, I played it righty.  Had I only known, I might have played for the New York Rangers…  Oh, and we learned that the derivation of the term “south paw” has to do with the requirement in baseball that the pitcher’s left side face to the south.  Who knew?

At any rate, great fellowship, humor and the Artic Char main course was nothing short of delicious.

Oh, and perhaps there’s someone out there, left handed or not, who can opine on whether animals (higher order mammals such as dogs and cats) are right or left handed…
