Supermensch
Opens June 6th at the Angelika Film Center
18 West Houston St.
In his directorial debut, Mike Myers documents the astounding career of Hollywood insider, the loveable Shep Gordon, who fell into music management by chance after moving to LA straight out of college, and befriending Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. Shep managed rock stars such as Pink Floyd, Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass and Alice Cooper, and later went on to manage chefs such as Emeril Lagasse, ushering in the era of celebrity chefs on television. Stuffed with fantastic archive footage the film traces Shep's transformation from the 1970's hedonist to today's practicing Buddhist yearning for a family of his own. Shalom Japan
June 1st-June 30th
310 South Fourth St., Brooklyn
As an expression of their Japanese and Jewish heritages, chef-owners Sawako Okochi and Aaron Israel bake their daily challah with sake kasu, a by-product of sake production often used in Japanese cooking. What to do with the leftover loaves? Bread pudding was the obvious answer. Okochi soaks the challah in custard (which includes E. Guittard dark chocolate, ripened bananas, and Battenkill Valley Creamery milk and cream) overnight, and then bakes it "low and slow." The result is a dessert that's soft and gooey on the inside, with a crispy exterior. It's served piping hot between a spoonful of crème fraîche and a pool of whiskey-caramel sauce. Cultural Arts

Bill Cunningham: Facades
June 1st-June 15th at the New-York Historical Society
170 Central Park West
In 1968, photographer Bill Cunningham embarked on an 8 year project to document the architectural riches and fashion history of the City. Scouring thrift stores, auction houses, and street fairs for vintage clothing, and scouting sites on his bicycle, Cunningham generated a photographic essay entitled Facades, which paired models in period costumes with historic settings. Although by turns whimsical and bold, the project was also part of the larger cultural zeitgeist in New York City during an era in which issues surrounding both the preservation and the problems of the urban landscape loomed large. Palaces for the People
June 1st-June 30th at the Museum of the City of New York
1220 Fifth Ave.
Throughout the five boroughs are more than 200 long-overlooked marvels of engineering and architectural beauty-the interlocking tile vaults built by Spanish immigrants Rafael Guastavino, Sr., and his son, Rafael Jr. The system of structural tile vaults developed by the Guastavinos-lightweight, fireproof, low-maintenance, and capable of supporting significant loads-was used by leading architects of the day, in such iconic buildings as Ellis Island's Registry Room, Carnegie Hall, the Bronx Zoo's Elephant House, and Grand Central Terminal. The beauty of this exhibit is that after viewing them in the museum you can then head out into the city actually visit them in person. Rediscover New York

Saving Place
June 1st-June 30th at the Museum of the City of New York
1220 Fifth Ave.
Many believe New York's pioneering Landmarks Law, enacted in April 1965, was the key factor in the rebirth of New York in the final quarter of the 20th century. It fostered pride in neighborhoods and resulted in neighborhood preservation in every borough, connecting and motivating residents and bringing new economic life to older communities. It ensured that huge swaths of the city remain a rich complex of new and old. It also ensured the creative re-use of countless buildings. At the same time, a new body of important architecture has emerged as architects, clients, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission devised innovative solutions for the renovation of landmark buildings and for new buildings in historic districts. The law spawned creativity in architects' responses to building preservation that has enhanced the cityscape in all five boroughs. Museum Mile Festival
June 10th from 6:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M
Fifth Ave. between E. 82nd St. and E. 105th St.
Begun as an initiative to spur the development of new museum audiences and to increase support for the arts during the fiscal crisis of the 1970s, Museum Mile was formed as a consortium by the museums that share the Fifth Avenue address. The first festival, held in 1978, was an instant success. Not only did it expose New Yorkers and NYC visitors to an incredible collection of New York's artistic riches, it also brought together disparate New Yorkers. From the barrios of East Harlem and the townhouses lining the Upper East Side, to the winding streets of the Village and the clustered neighborhoods of the outer-boroughs, people came to celebrate their shared pride in their city. Walking Tours

Crosstown Pizza Walk
June 2nd-June 30th at 11:00 A.M.
Meets near the corner of Spring and Mulberry Sts.
The best way to enjoy New York is by walking its streets, but the only way to taste New York is by eating its pizza. You can do both with a NYC Pizza Walk! Little Italy's streets once overflowed with peddlers and fruit carts as the tenement buildings teemed with the disillusioned, transplanted from home and in search of a better life. It was here that a peasants' meal called "pizza" made its debut in America. This tour focuses on pizza from a historical perspective. It starts at America's oldest pizzeria and follows pizza's rise to ubiquity block by block. All this talking about pizza will undoubtedly make you hungry, so you'll have slices at 3 of New York's most significant pizzerias in Little Italy and Greenwich Village. After the Pizza Walk, you'll have a renewed appreciation for this modest dish and the people who introduced it to the masses.
