Oriental Garden
Apr. 1st-Apr. 30th
14 Elizabeth St.
When a bare-bones Chinatown restaurant gets regular visits from chefs like David Bouley, you know it's doing something right. If you want to make the acquaintance of your dinner before you ingest it, this is your place. Stacked at the entrance are tanks of crabs, prawns and clams, but they're displayed in a matter-of-fact rather than theatrical fashion, the first indication that Oriental Garden is about the freshness of ingredients and no-nonsense preparations that highlight that. While the atmosphere is negligible, some of the dishes - like fried geoduck clam belly, and steamed whole sea bass - validate the estimation of many Chinese-Americans and food fans that consider this Chinatown's best seafood restaurant. Phoenix: Xu Bing at the Cathedral
Apr. 1st at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine
1047 Amsterdam Ave.
Over the course of two years, pioneering Chinese contemporary artist Xu Bing culled detritus from construction sites across the rapidly changing urban landscape of Beijing, and transformed it into his most monumental project to date: Phoenix (2008-10). A feat of engineering and ingenuity, Phoenix is composed of two birds, a male called Feng and a female called Huang. Feng and Huang-each weighing 12 tons and measuring 90 and 100 feet long, respectively-are now at the Cathedral hanging suspended in the Nave, two majestic birds in perpetual flight beneath its celestial ceiling.
