Below is a note we just received from a close life time family friend from the Philippines who spends time in the US, giving his first hand feedback of the devastation.

Please see below a message from Charlie about the devastation in Leyte, specifically his town of Tanauan (where he was also mayor).  Tanauan is right near Tacloban the large city so much in the news.  Also, Tanauan is the place where MacArthur returned to the Philippines during WWII, (the Carl Myden's boxes on board).  Geline is Charlie's sister who was in Tanauan when the storm hit.

I am now in Manila and Geline is still in Tanauan. The casualty count is incredible and just hard to be accurate about. For example, in the Village of the Avila fishponds where some 2000 people used to live, only 30 survived the storm surge. Earthquakes have their consequent tsunamis hereabouts but super storms have their surge of ocean and river waters meeting so quickly, so fast, drowning people in their wake as they go as high as 15 to20 feet.
Food and water are a big problem and the stench of dead bodies not yet buried.so many relatives and friends perished. Remember I am really a Tanauan boy, even got elected Mayor of the place ( the 4th Avila generation to so so); so, just about every one is related to me socially or biologically. Thanks for all your prayers and concern. This is the 5th day of my organizing work of relief efforts for Tanauan and Leyte in general. So many meetings, persuading, donations, trucking, going to get as much space in the C130 cargo plane early every morning, answering all sorts of queries from everyone on every loved ones whereabouts, explaining to media, etc. Adrenalin flowing like crazy, little sleep, crying suddenly, intermittently when realizing again who just died, how so many of them did...
