Hello along the network,

The word "Gotham" has long been shorthand for "New York", and there's a
wonderful exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York called "The
Grid". It chronicles the efforts of planners who conceived the idea of
having Manhattan north of what is today Houston St. being laid out in a
grid pattern. This was in 1811, when the city's population was just
100,000 souls! Here's a link:

Do not miss this fascinating exhibit! Original maps, the master
surveyor's tools, and a marvelous slide show convey the sense of purpose
and genius of the people whose extraordinary vision bequeathed modern
New York to us. The museum is located at 5th Avenue and 103rd Street,
and if you go by car, parking is easy on the weekends, especially.

We also had a terrific lunch at the Neue Galerie Museum at 86th and 5th.
They have a Viennese restaurant with the most delicious food, dessert
and coffee. Their spaetzl is world class.
