Job Description
Position Summary: 

The Government Affairs Officer will serve as the Department of Education’s (DOE) primary liaison to elected officials within one or multiple borough(s).  The Government Affairs Officer will also assist and support Department-based initiatives and projects related to the DOE’s strategy on engagement initiatives with school communities, community-based organizations and other key education stakeholders.  Performs related work.

 
Reports to: Executive Director of Public Affairs

Direct Reports: N/A

Key Relationships: Executive Director of Public Affairs, elected officials and staff members.

Responsibilities

 

Government Affairs

Serve as the DOE’s primary point of contact and liaison to elected officials and their offices.
Proactively engage, brief and solicit feedback from elected officials (and other stakeholders) on education-related issues affecting their schools, neighborhoods and districts.
Answer and manage inquiries and correspondence from elected officials (and other stakeholders) regarding DOE policies, initiatives and constituent-related concerns.
Community Engagement

Regularly represent the DOE at public and private meetings and forums.
Support the DOE’s engagement with school communities, Community Based Organizations, advocacy groups and other education stakeholders.
Assist in the planning, execution and management of public meetings, briefings, events, school visits and other initiatives organized by the Office of Public Affairs (OPA) and the DOE.
Planning and Initiatives

Collaborate with other DOE divisions to help identify, develop and advance initiatives and priorities.
Regularly advise, consult and work with other DOE divisions and colleagues to ensure cross-functional coordination of DOE planning, initiatives and outreach.
Participate in and lead Department-based initiatives and internal work teams on behalf of OPA.
Qualification Requirements:

Minimum

A baccalaureate degree from an approved college or university and four years of full-time paid experience of a nature appropriate to the duties of the position, such as government affairs, communications, public/education administration, community relations, journalism, advertising, marketing; or a related area. 18 months of this experience must have been in a managerial or supervisory capacity; or
A satisfactory combination of post baccalaureate education and experience.
However, all candidates must have the 18 months of experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity.
Plus

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Experienced and effective public speaker and presenter.
Excellent problem-solving skills, organizational skills and attention to detail.
Flexibility, creativity and ability to work well under pressure.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Sharepoint.
Preferred

Experience with elected officials and New York City government officials.
Knowledge of and work experience with education policy.
Familiarity with the New York City public school system.
Bilingual (Spanish).
Salary: $59,000+

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not make less than their current salary.)
