[Fredslist] Gotham-need your advice on GPS

I rely on my GPS to get me around the Hinterlands.

My old Garmin GPS unit is ancient and not completely reliable anymore.

Last week I bought a new Garmin 1450LMT (lifetime map updates and lifetime
traffic warning) at $129.99, a great price. I can still return it.

I am wondering if I am better off downloading a GPS app to my iphone,
instead of keeping the new GPS unit, and pocketing the $70 difference.

A few questions-

1) has anyone had experience with the Garmin iphone app and if so, do you
recommend a certain Garmin-branded app?

2) any experience and preference: Garmin vs Magellan vs TomTom iphone apps?

3) what happens to the iphone app after I trade in my current iphone for my
next iphone in a year-does the existing GPS app get loaded onto the new
phone?

4) any other things I am not thinking of?

Need your advice. I know if will be helpful.
