[Fredslist] Excel spreadsheet question

If anyone can help with a question from my brother:

 

 

Hey, in excel do you know if there is a way i could do the following:

1     |     A
5     |     B
9     |     C
2     |     A
3     |     B
7     |     C

Add the numbers in column one based on the second category column (In this
example the categories I am using are just A, B, C)? 

So A=3, B=8, C=16?  Possibly even make drop down lists in each field with my
categories?
