[Fredslist] advice on disputing a charge

Greetings. I have been processing credit cards as a merchant service for a
while, and therefore have dealt with disputes now and then.

My experience is that for a matter like this, the credit card company will
ask whether the services were actually provided or not. If the services are
provided but you dispute the quality, a credit card company will generally
inform you that it is necessary to go to court (or of course, settle the
matter with the vendor). An exception is car repair, where they accept a
bill from another mechanic, but for more complex matters they are not
equipped to intervene and judge who is telling the truth.

In short, Katalin's advice is good, although I am not sure how polite to be
if they have mishandled your pet's care, but that sounds like the situation
is not completely clear yet. Maybe they can clarify exactly what happened,
and you can become decide whether it was a reasonable sequence of events or
was really mishandled. In any case, you can try to settle the matter with
the hospital, and I do not think a credit card company will intervene.

Geraldine,

I am sorry about the loss of your dog. It is sad when we lose a companion
and friend.

Prior bail out time credit card companies took care of the entire process.
Now days it seems that most large ones can't get a handle on what they are
actually doing.

I suggest for you to write a polite letter to the hospital informing them
about the disputed charges, your disappointment with the level of care and
level of information provided. At the end of a letter offer a reasonable
settlement. Send it certified mail and keep a copy.

Hi Gotham Wizards,

Can you give me advice on this matter? I was very upset with care given my
dog at a hospital (he died there without clear info of what happened, and
more) and want to dispute the heavy charges. We have filed a dispute with
the credit card company. Do we leave it to them or do we call the hospital
and ask them to adjust the bill?

Help. I have never done this before.
