From someone in the business...
I have a long-time client in Florida that develops the warranties that
dealers sell. My client does not sell these directly to consumers. He
works through 230 agents throughout the country. These agents sell to
dealerships.
I just finished a call with one of the principals and asked what
advice he had. Here it is in a nutshell:
1. Do not buy something online. Do not buy from a telemarketer. These
constitute the majority of scam programs.
2. The very best strategy is to return to the dealership where you
purchased the vehicle -- or visit a franchised dealership where you
intend to have it serviced. In other words, if you drive a Ford, go to
a Ford dealer. Ask the Ford dealer to help you purchase and obtain the
right warranty program for you. Make your deal there. They have a hard
time abandoning you if you have a problem with a warranty claim.
3. Make sure you know not only the terms of the contract, but also the
name of the insurance company that's backing the warranty. The
dealership can provide you a rating for the insurance company. Look
for A rated.
4. Question the claims procedures and understand all exclusions (what
isn't covered).
5. Extended warranties can become quite expensive. Make sure you plan
to keep the car. The majority of plans are not transferrable... but
ask. It could help you if you ultimately sell the vehicle to a private
party and the vehicles comes with the balance of your extended warranty.
Hope this helps. gil
