I'm glad to see a healthy debate about the subject of healthcare and
malpractice reform. Is anyone taking notes? I'd love to see more debates
like this. Perhaps we can consider adding these types of debates to the
Gotham Gazette in future issues. It is a wonderful cross section of
thoughts, ideas, and stakeholder input.
Warmest Regards

Bruce,
Great synopsis.
Between "increase premiums" and "tort reform", there lies a third path.
Look at anesthesiologists - unlike other disciplines, they really took on
that they were responsible for the rise in malpractice premiums, and as an
industry, have focused intensely on reducing errors and thereby, premiums.
On adjusted dollar basis, Anesthesiologists pay 20%-50% lower premiums
today, then they did 20 years ago.
A research study across several medical institutions used a really neat
technology to reduce medical errors by significant margin.
That state-of-the-art technology? A checklist
I've dealt with doctors, hospitals, clinics and pharmaceuticals for the
past 15 years as an IT consultant and a HIPAA expert.
And frankly, the way healthcare runs is a mess. The local gas station /
car repair shop does a better job of maintaining records and fixing cars
than doctors do.
Good news is, as more firms adopt HIPAA compliance as a way of doing
business, and start systematizing medicine, we're seeing a trendline that
reduces avoidable medical errors over time.
