The promotion closest to my heart is the promotion of education for disadvantaged inner New York City youth. If I have sufficiently hooked you please read on below or consider buying some of our holiday cards. Thank you!

Dear Friend:
Our pride in nurturing The High School for Leadership and Public
Service (“HSLAPS” or “Leadership”) grows each year.
This unique learning opportunity was inspired by a challenge by my
fraternity brother Donald Schupak to our alma mater, Syracuse University
(“SU”), to increase its educational presence in New York City, where
inner-city students are often excluded from participating in innovative
educational programs. SU Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs
picked up the gauntlet, and in the fall of 1993 the High School began its
“rookie” year. Now it is home to more than 600 inner-city students
representing all five boroughs. Our unique school focuses on providing a
solid college preparatory program with required courses on leadership in
our society and the requirement that all students participate in community
service internships during their high school years.
Time does fly and we are now in our 12th year, and many of the
recipients of this letter have been involved with HSLAPS since its
inception.
The following are just some of the updated highlights of our
ambitious efforts to be “Friends” of the High School:
1. Mentoring! We ended last year with nearly 70 active mentoring
partnerships between students from Leadership and Syracuse University
alumnae in New York City. Ours pairs participated in Regents
tutoring, bowling, neighborhood scavenger hunts, the Prom Closet, and
community service activities together. Ours is also one of the
largest mentoring programs in the city and the longest running
partnership between a private university and a public school.

2. Students on the Hill! This fall Syracuse University welcomed 12
students from Leadership! This is the largest class from our school
that has attended Syracuse since the inception of the school. We have
every reason to believe that our graduates will become participatory
and productive members of the Syracuse community. There are also 17
other Leadership graduates matriculating in their sophomore, junior
and senior years at SU. Seven Leadership alumnae graduated from
Syracuse this past May. We are proud that the retention and
graduation rates of our students at Syracuse are higher than the
University average.
3. Summer College! Seven Leadership students made Syracuse their
home this past summer as they took two courses in a chosen discipline
at SU’s Summer College for High School Students. These students truly
appreciated their summer experiences at SU and will all be applying
for admission to the class of 2010 this winter.
4. Our Friends lend a helping hand! The Friends of Leadership
increased their participation on-site with the creation of a 9th
grade “Book Club” to engage our struggling readers in supplemental
literacy activities. Additionally, the Friends are establishing
relationships with middle school guidance counselors to increase the
pool of motivated, high-achieving students applying to attend our
school next fall. The dedication of our Friends is a unique resource
and they are invaluable to the functioning of our school.
While we are most proud of the unprecedented number of inner city
students we are sending to the Hill, we must admit we are suffering, in a
way, from our success as we do not have sufficient funds to continue on
such an ever increasing scale. Thus, we ask you to consider doubling your
efforts to help us perpetuate this model program which the New Chancellor
has recognized as being an integral part of the “Soul of Syracuse.”
Please add your support to the High School by making a tax-deductible
donation to “The Friends of HSLAPS, Inc.” (The Friends of HSLAPS is a New
York State not-for-profit foundation, formed pursuant to Section 501(c)(3)
of the Internal Revenue Code.) Or, you could make a donation to SU and
earmark it for HSLAPS. Please take a moment to complete and return the
enclosed reply form today. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Fred C. Klein
