The Scarsdale Women's club and the American Society of Interior Designers
have partnered in a wonderful Designer Showhouse at the old Rowsley Estate at 37
Drake Road in Scarsdale. We would love for you all to come and see the
transformation of this old 1850's estate. Tickets are $30 and proceeds benefit
the American Cancer Society. There are 23 ASID Designers represented at the
house. I created the Butler's Pantry. The show runs through 5/22--10-6
daily and until 8 on Thursday nights.

Hope to see some of you there!
If you need more information, please let me know.

About The Show House
About the Show House

A Designer Show House showcases well known interior designers from the
metropolitan area, as well as features some up-and-coming ones. Each of the
selected designers is assigned a room to decorate. The Show House is open to the
public for two weeks preceded by a carefully orchestrated Opening Night
Reception to kick off the designer experience. Workshops, speakers and other
interactive elements will also be incorporated into the Show House.
History of The Rowsley Estate
The Scarsdale Woman’s Club is the current owner of The Rowsley Cottage which
was built in 1858 and is set on four acres of magnificent trees. The club
is well known in Westchester and has a reputation as a center for culture and
education with concerts, lectures and seminars given on a daily basis
throughout the year. Its commitment to philanthropy supports ambitious projects
designed to help those less fortunate and its goal is to nurture women in the
community.
This manor style house is built in an area with enormous history. The land
on which it stands was once part of an old farm owned by William Saxon, an
18th century miller. The house itself, Rowsley Cottage, was built in 1858 by an
enterprising young iron merchant named William Bailey Lang. It was fashioned
after an estate he saw in Derbyshire, England, that had captured his fancy.
In the manner of the cultivated people of his day, he searched Europe and
America for splendid furnishings and fine trees for the estate, which then
occupied thirty-four acres.
Lang, who was a gifted artist, brought to his country home elements of the
castles and museums he visited. Built in the 19th century mansard roof style,
the entrance features a set of eight stained glass windows with acanthus
leaves, dolphins and cornucopia, executed in silver stain and amber glass. It
gives a medieval light as one enters the 120 foot long hall. In Lang’s time,
it was filled with tapestries, mail-clad figures, paintings and old furniture.
The home was lit by candles and fireplaces that cast interesting shadows on
the walls and gave an appearance suggestive of past centuries.
William Bailey Lang died in 1887. His house was bought from one of the
subsequent owners in 1928 by the Scarsdale Woman’s Club. The lively history of
the house has been continued by the 80 year story of the Club’s activities in
it.
