Greetings Gotham,

Here are some tips and facts to consider prior to the forthcoming Gotham
SEO roundtable (an effort being led by Gotham Long Island member David
Abeshouse):

1 More than 400 million Internet searches occur each day in North
America.

    2. Consider the reason why you want to SEO your web site. If you
want top position, what do you want top position for? If it¹s for traffic,
what type of traffic? Top position and lots of traffic are useless if it
doesn¹t result in new customers and sales.

    3. Before embarking on an SEO project, first consider what it is you
are really good at, where you have solid credentials (and references and
case studies) and the areas of your business that are most profitable for
you.

    4. Discover the difference between how you describe your offerings and
compare that to the terms, phrases and vocabulary used by your prospective
customers to describe what they want to buy. If you rely solely on your own
terms, you may end up with top search engine position for a term that no one
is using to search.

    5. Learn out how people are searching for what you sell with a free
tool from Yahoo! at http://inventory.overture.com (do not use www in this
address). Use this tool to find out the different ways people are searching
for what you sell. Plus it will provide you with a query count from the most
recent month available. The query count is the actual number of times people
performed a search on Yahoo! in North America using that term. To estimate
how many searches have occurred across the North American Internet, multiply
by 3 (to include Google and MSN---as of recent measurements, about 30% of
all searches are performed using Yahoo!). Multiply by 12 to get an estimate
for the year.

    6. Remember, that the highest number of queries for a term may not be
the best for you. In fact, multiple terms with multiple top listings will
spread your site around to more places and attract a wider audience.

    7. Search engines want you to be extremely focused in your web site.
This includes construction, content and cross-linking.

Regards,

Phil
