The recent outbreak of measles has thrown this issue front and center. If you haven't heard, The Washington Post has indentified Disneyland in California as Ground Zero in the current outbreak.
I wondered how this could happen and, after tooling around on the internet, I found that there are many parents who don't allow their children to be vaccinated. The Amish, in particular, believe that vaccinations are dangerous which led to the scene of the worst outbreak of measles in recent history. It was caused by an Amish missionary returning from the Philippines. This trip caused over 350 cases of measles. And measles is a pretty tough virus to get rid of.
This rising anti-vaxx tide allows this desease to spread easily when a traveler, who has been in an area of the world where measles are active, comes in contact with a geographic cluster of unvaccinated people. Kind of like a powder keg.
Do you believe in vaccinations?
