Having the Monday blog spot the day after the Super Bowl puts me in a great position to be a Monday Quarterback. Of course, anyone who knows me knows that I don’t have the expertise to second guess the coaching of the game. My interest in the game is in the commercials.
This year, I am very interested in the commercials that I saw before the game. It seems as if every year more and more commercials are either leaked or previewed before the game. If you have a Facebook page, you must have seen prior to the game this year’s Budweiser Clydesdale commercial which features one of the horses and a puppy. This commercial has been shared numerous times on the Facebook, mostly by women, with the caption, “guaranteed to make you cry.” While most beer commercials seem to be aimed at men, I think it was brilliant of Budweiser to develop, and then allow to be previewed, a beer commercial which positively affected so many women.
On the other hand, I found the previews for Budweiser’s other Super Bowl commercial very disconcerting. In those previews, we see a wigged Arnold Schwarzenegger stretching in provocative ways to prepare for a ping pong match. I’m not sure whether it was the wig or the facial expressions he made while stretching, but I was extremely uncomfortable watching the previews. I did find the full commercial, also previewed on the internet, in which a person is handed a Bud Light and proceeds on a strange night with cameos by Minka Kelly, Don Cheadle, and One Republic, fun to watch.
One of my favorite commercials previewed this year was the commercial for Dannon Oikios yogurt, where John Stamos, Bob Saget, and Dave Coulier reprised their roles from Full House. I thought it was funny and smart, especially given that John Stamos is already a spokesperson for Dannon. That commercial led to another, and funnier, reunion on the Jimmy Fallon Show and several other humerous late night appearances by the trio, all before the commercial was actually aired during the Super Bowl.
Lastly, there were the previews for the David Beckham commercial where the producers were polling as to whether the commercial aired on the night of the game should show Beckham covered or uncovered. I am a Beckham fan but I am not a fan of all his tattoos. So I believe I may be the only person on this planet who voted to cover Beckham up.
Were there any commercials that actually premiered during the Super Bowl? What was your favorite commercial?
