I have always had a penchant for disliking pop music. When I was in high school, the most popular music was "New Wave", as distasteful a genre of music that has ever existed. It brought on the advent of electronically produced music. which has led to all sorts of bad things in musical history, including the distinct decline in aggregate musical talent.
One of the few bright spots in this last Super Bowl (outside of those like me who won money from their boxes) was the breakthrough performance of Bruno Mars at halftime. I knew about Bruno Mars prior to last Sunday. I knew he was extremely talented, but I had never really seen him perform live. My daughter told me that he has only released two albums. Considering his widespread popularity, it sounds like he is only just getting started.
I think what is thoroughly enjoyable is not just his apparent 'Motown' allegiance, but the true talent that overflows as he juggles different musical styles all while performing at the highest lever possible. The sky really is the limit for this kid and unlike many Super Bowl performances, we may look back at Sunday evening as the launching point for his super stardom.
